Sponsorship Opportunity

Align your brand with internationally-known artist Diane Jarvi and reach Finnish-American audiences across Minnesota by sponsoring Singing on a Joy Stone
High quality, distinctly Finnish-American performance event attended by residents of the Cokato area and the Twin Cities
Plus educational, culturally significant collection of writings by and about Finnish-Americans in the Cokato area to be distributed throughout Minnesota arts and cultural networks

The Concert is a family-friendly show and lunch at Dassel History Center’s Universal Laboratories Building.  All are invited to experience this event typical of an historical Finn Hall evening: poetry, stories, dance, singing and kantele music.

This culminating element of an extensive residency by Minnesota’s own Diane Jarvi draws on local oral and written immigrant history in collaboration with Cokato area community members for a full concert performance.  A host of other renowned Minnesota artists perform along with Jarvi and participants in intergenerational kantele (Finnish folk harp) workshops she has conducted in Cokato since September.

Featured performers are well-known accordionist Dan Newton from Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion, and exceptional world music guitarist and mandolin player Brian Barnes.  As a trio (with Jarvi) they had a successful musical tour all throughout Finland. Jarvi and Newton also performed together in northern Finland for a Northern Lights Festival.

Other guest artists include: folk dancers from the internationally known Finnish-American dance group Kisarit, and members of the Finn Hall Band from the Twin Cities area, featuring Ralph Tuttila on mandolin and jouhikko; Cheryl Paschke on violin and nyckelharpa; and Dennis Halme on accordion.

The Publication, an educational program and collection of Finnish songs, music and ancestral stories produced in collaboration with the community, will be distributed free to audience members.  In addition the Singing on a Joy Stone publication will be available locally through the Cokato historical groups and also distributed to other Minnesota communities in order to raise awareness, appreciation and visibility of Finnish-America.

Co-presented by New Bohemian Arts Cooperative, Cokato Finnish-American Historical Society and Cokato Historical Society.

Recognition and Outreach Times Two!
Singing on a Joy Stone is a live concert and a publication of great importance to the Cokato Finnish-American community that culminates a 9-month folk music residency by Diane Jarvi.  The overall project has potential to ignite interest and awareness statewide, and will be shared for possible replication in other Minnesota regions rich in Finnish-American history.

Diane Jarvi’s residency goal has been to help Cokato community members carry on the rich musical heritage of their Finnish ancestry and create interest and awareness of Finnish-American culture and history in Minnesota.

More than 90% of financial support for Jarvi’s residency has been contributed by the Minnesota State Arts Board, Suomi Seura (The Finland Society of Helsinki), Finlandia Foundation National and many Twin Cites and Cokato individuals. Business sponsorships are being offered to raise the last 10% of matching funds.
